Til Gul Ghya, God God Bola- Makar Sankrant

Sankranti is not supposed to be a 'good ' festival. Babies and newly married couples do not celebrate it as their first 'festival'. Instead, they wait for gudi padwa, the festival marking the beginning of the new year of the Hindu calendar. But for the rest, it is one of the most auspicious events of the year.

Sankrant is the first Hindu festival of the solar calendar year, falling on January 14. It is one of the most auspicious times for the followers of the Hindu religion. 

This festival coincides with the Sun's northward journey (Uttarayan). On Jan 14, the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Makar ( Capricorn). Sankranti means the movement from one zodiac sign to another.

On the Sankranti day, Laddu made of til (sesame seeds) with gul (jaggery) is a speciality of this festival and most popularly made in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It's an occasion to visit near and dear ones and distribute tilgul saying "Tilgul ghya, god god bola" that means "Take a tilgul and talk sweet as it". And forget the past ill-feelings and hostilities and resolve to speak sweetly and remain friends.

Tilgul Laddu is a very simple sweet and easy to prepare. Does not need much of ingredients and is just a combination of sesame and jaggery which is offered to all the guests and neighbors visiting the house on the day of Sankranti. Since this festival is celebrated in mid winter ideally Tilgul recipe is a combination that helps keep the body warm due to these heat generating ingredients making it a healthy sweet to enjoy.

Til (Sesame seeds):

Til seeds help in maintaining our skin health. It keeps skin soft and healthy.
